Partner Search: Horizon 2020 - "Addressing the challenge of migrant integration through ICT-enabled solutions"

Partner search under Horizon2020 programme

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology, is looking for partners in order to submit a project proposal under the Horizon 2020 programme, Societal Challenge 6: Europe in a changing world – Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies, Call: DT-MIGRATION-06-2018-2019: Addressing the challenge of migrant integration through ICT-enabled solutions (p.12-14 of Draft Work Programme 2018-2020 https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020/sites/horizon2020/files/draft_h2020-sc6-2018-2020.pdf).

According to the call, projects should address the migrants' personal and family situation, including their political status, origin, skills, language skills, medical records, etc. Public authorities could use stored information about migrants to tailor an “integration package” to support integration in the host country. Example: Immigrants with specific work skills can be offered a) a temporary job in a company which has registered with a job opening, while at the same time b) taking a course on safety regulations in the host country and c) a language course which includes the professional vocabulary s/he needs (and possibly vocabulary related to health and other problems, depending on the immigrant’s personal needs). Another part of the integration package could be d) cultural information; this is sometimes integrated into language courses.

NTNU’s idea and package addresses mainly point 2 in the call (and to some extent point 3) but can also be taken as an “ingredient” of a more general set of services. NTNU’s contribution to an integration package would focus on language skills representing an important asset for effective inclusion of Migrants. NTNU has developed two platforms for multilingual language learning, more specifically pronunciation training. The two platforms developed by NTNU are:

·         WEB-BASED RESEARCH PLATFORM

The Computer-Assisted Listening and Speaking Tutor (CALST). CALST offers pronunciation exercises: listening, speaking, writing for British English and for Norwegian. Since Norwegian does not have a standard pronunciation (unlike English), learners can choose from eight different dialects. CALST also offers vocabulary training.

·         COMMERCIAL APP

The SOUNDS GOOD app has been developed in a spin-off company. Its language contents are taken from CALST, and the user interface in Sounds Good is more playful.

Sounds Good is now being merged with the company Box of Words. As a result of the merger, the company will be able to offer user-centred vocabulary, esp. vocabulary used in the workplace.

Partners sought: Anyone interested to open a dialogue on this call.

Deadline for proposal submission: 13 March 2018
