TYPICAL SEMESTER: 5th

AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
This subject aims to support, cultivate and develop the student's ability to design open urban spaces of a limited size (squares, pedestrian zones, sea-fronts etc). Emphasis is given on the historical-cultural identity of the place.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Students have to work on projects dealing with exterior spaces of a limited size. Collaboration with plastic arts and three-dimensional structures support and motivate an artistic conception of architectural design. Departing from the theoretical background of Phenomenology on the one hand and Post-structuralism on the other, students have to create architectural metaphors concerning contemporary man's relation to nature, history and other cultures. The working process departs from an artistic construction and continues with a series of architectural models in a variety of scales.
The subject's theory includes three unities: the first deals with the historical dimension of the notion of public space on the one hand and the garden on the other; the second concerns an approach to the work of artistic movements as well as separate artists which could be related to conceptions of urban space; and the third deals with contemporary examples.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
This subject provides the student with a theoretical and methodological framework for the design of open spaces within urban environment.
