In the fall of 2005, within the framework of INTERREG IIIC program, the Department of Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art, proposed and achieved the assignment of the subproject “Strategic Intervention for the Restoration of the Damages of Aghios Petros, in Eastern Attica”. The Department, which is active in the field of educational research, is participating in several projects concerning the protection of cultural heritage, (undertook the obligation to restore the small Byzantine church that suffered severe damages from the 1999 Earthquake.)

As the Head of the Department I strongly support the participation of the Technological Educational Institution (TEI) of Athens in projects with international involvement in order to reinforce the international collaborations and exchange of knowledge. Projects which promote and protect the cultural heritage of Greece are especially of high interest to the Department of Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art.

The collaboration of the TEI with the University of Molise (UNIMOL) made it possible to compare the scientific approach to different types of monuments that have suffered damages from earthquakes. UNIMOL has undertaken the study and restoration of a public building dated to the second century B.C. situated in Monte Vairano – Baranello, Italy. Additionally the partnership with the Archaeological Centre of Var (CAV), which is restoration scientists, offers an interdisciplinary view of the monument’s restoration.

During the progress of the project the collaboration with the National Centre of Scientific Research (NDSR) “Demokritos” has proved to be essential, as all the required analysis of structural and decorative materials were undertaken by them.

The main aim of the project is to act as a pilot application, indicating the measures required in order to face and restore the damages caused in architectural heritage by earthquakes.

This project focuses in the exemplary application of measures that should be taken in order to face and restore the damages which are caused by earthquakes to architectural monuments and the integrated works of art, such as wall paintings and mosaics.

Greece is a country of high seismic activity and I believe that it is of great importance to sensitise the public authorities to take the necessary measures to manage natural risk hazards in the future and in addition to produce an intervention methodology that could be applied by specialists and professionals who are active in the field of the protection of cultural heritage.

This co funded project will finally result in the restoration of the monument and the outcome that will be presented to the public will be the product of an international, interdisciplinary collaboration between different European countries.
