Dr. Hatziapostolou Antonios
Χατζηαποστόλου Αντώνιος

He holds a PhD (1991) from the Mechanical Engineering Department, Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London and a Diploma (1982) in Mechanical Engineering from the Mechanical Engineering Department, School of Engineering, University of Patras. His thesis was on the experimental and theoretical investigation of flow and combustion processes in direct-injection diesel engines. On 2001, he was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Department of Energy Technology, while on 2005 he was promoted to Associate Professor. During the period 1993-2000, he was a Researcher at the Laser Applications Division, Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser, Foundation for Research and Technology (IESL-FORTH) in Heraklion, Crete. He also served as Research Assistant and Research Associate at Imperial College. He has two years industrial experience, which he gained at the start of his professional career (1984-1986), when he served as production engineer and quality inspector at Sielman S.A. in Volos, a company manufacturing spare parts for armoured vehicles of the Greek Army.
His research interests include the following scientific areas:
- Combustion studies of gaseous, atomised liquid and pulverised solid fuels with the aim to improve efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions in various systems, such as industrial cement kilns and internal combustion engines.
- Development and applications of diagnostic techniques for fluid flow and combustion on laboratory and/or industrial scale: Laser Doppler Velocimetry, High-Speed Photography and Shadowgraphy / Schlieren, Optical Pyrometry, various Spectroscopic techniques such as laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), Raman spectroscopy, coherent anti-stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS).
- Development and application of laser-based techniques for material processing, such as cutting, welding and surface coating with special ceramics.
He has collaborated with various industrial organisations (Volkswagen, Ford, Philips, Saint Gobain Recherche, TITAN Cement Industy, Thyssen Krupp Stahl, Rautaruukki, Plastika Kritis S.A.), within the framework of research projects co-funded by the EU Commission, the British and Greek national Research organisations (SERC - now EPSCR and GSRT respectively). During the last 10 years, he has also served as coordinator / project manager in several research projects.
He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) since 1982, member of the International Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) since 1987 and a founding member of the Greek section of the Combustion Institute.
He has twelve publications in peer- reviewed scientific journals, four contributions to conference proceedings and several oral presentations to conferences and workshops. He also has 77 citations in 72 scientific articles (January 2005).
