Dr. Koubogiannis Dimitrios
Κουμπογιάννης Δημήτριος

He graduated as a Mechanical Enineer (1992) from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), where he also elaborated his doctoral thesis (1998, under the title "Numerical Solution of the Navier-Stokes Equations on Unstructured Grids in a Parallel Processing Environment", Laboratory of Thermal Turbomachines, Fluids Section, Department of Mechanical Engineering, NTUA).
He possesses papers in journals and announcements in international conferences, important educational experience on graduate courses at NTUA and Technological Educational Institutes, as well as industrial experience (Hellenic Aerospace Industry, Electronics Department). In particular: During the course of his doctoral thesis, as well as later as a research engineer, he has participated actively in a number of Research Projects, under the financing of either European Community, National funds or in cooperation with Companies on topics relevant to his scientific interests (see below). During the academic years 1999-2005 he worked as a (teaching) Fellow in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Technological Educational Institute of Halkida, where he was the responsible for theoretical as well as laboratorial courses ("Gas Turbines", "Laboratory of Gas Turbines", "Gas Dynamics", "Heat Transfer", "Thermodynamics", "Special Chapters on Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer"). To his educational experience, it has to be mentioned, the co-teaching of graduate courses in the Inter-Departmental Program of Graduate Studies of NTUA on "Computational Mechanics" (1999-2002), as well as the teaching assistantship he provided to undergraduate courses, both theoretical ("Technical Design" in the Chemical Engineering Dept. of NTUA, academic year 2000-2001, "Viscous Flows in Turbomachines" in the Mechanical Engineering Dept. of NTUA, academic hear 1994-1998) and laboratorial ("Thermal Turbomachines Ι" in the Mechanical Engineering Dept. of NTUA, academic year 1996-1997). During the years 2001-2004 he was an employee of the Hellenic Aerospace Industry, where he worked as a Mechanical Engineer in the "Engineering Department", later named "Department of Design & Development of Electronic Systems & Applications" belonging to the Electronics Business Unit of that Company. Since 15-3-2005, he is an Assistant Professor in the Energy Technology Department of the Technological Educational Institute of Athens.
His scientific interests concern the energy branch of Mechanical Engineering, as well as that of Computational Mechanics and especially Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). They mainly include:
- The development of computational methods for the numerical solution of fluid flows (compressible or incompressible flows, structured and unstructured grids, implementation of turbulence models, grid adaptation, multigrid, parallel processing).
- The numerical simulation of flow phenomena of technological interest (steady and unsteady flows, heat transfer in turbomachines, fluid-structure interaction, etc).
- The formulation, modeling and solution of problems concerning design optimization of aerodynamic shapes and turbomachinery components (using CFD and modern optimization methods, both deterministic or/and stochastic).
- The modeling of the operation of thermal plants (gas and steam turbines) and also the optimization of their performance by means of creating relevant software and making use of optimization tools.
