Aims and Scope

To learn the basic theory of metrology, the most common types of forming machines and their cutting tools, forming machining through material subtraction and plastic deformation, operation of the common forming machines and their cutting tools, casting and welding processes, as well as, basic tribology and lubrication theory with application to various types and elements of machines.

Course Description 

Measurements and instruments of length and angle. Tolerances and kind of mechanical joints. Cutting and forming tools, materials defects and selection. Materials, forming under heat or pressure. Types of welding, electrodes, techniques and materials.  Casting techniques, materials and model selection and process. Type of cutting and forming machines.  Safety measures and protection. Friction, friction energy, friction losses. Theory of lubricating oil film, factors affecting lubrication, lubricant properties, methods of lubrication, greasing bases. Lubrication of internal combustion engines, reciprocating steam engines, refrigeration equipment, gear. Lubricants for cutting. Lesions of lubricants during use. Replace of lubricant, rejuvenation of lubricating grease, greases.

Expected Course Outcome 

After the end of the course student should be able to: 

  • Know the basics of mechanical engineering measurements.
  • Know the basic machinery processes of the materials and their mechanisms.
  • Know the basic principles of the tribology and applications of lubrications in mechanics.
