Internal Combustion Engines II
Course Code:  5423B
Course Type:  Theory & Laboratory
Course Category:  Optional
Hours per Week:  6 (Theory 4, Lab 2)
Credit Units:  6,5
Semester:  E

Aims and Scope

The main aim is the in-depth study of the operation of reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines. The students should learn how to perform thermodynamic calculations in Diesel and Otto engines and understand the principles of the dynamics of the piston-connecting rod-crankshaft movement. They should also study the combustion process in petrol and diesel engines and they will learn how to correlate the findings from the theoretical calculations with the real performance laboratory IC data.

Description of the Course

Theory: Introduction to the various types of IC engines. Basic geometric calculations of the reciprocating IC engines. In-depth thermodynamic analysis of the basic cycles. Induction, scavenging and exhaust processes. Super- and Turbo-charging. Air flow through valves and flow development during compression, ignition and expansion. Thermodynamic efficiency and engine performance. Current injection systems and combustion chamber design – flow/combustion interaction. Fuels for IC engines and pollutant formation mechanisms.

Laboratory: Measurements and testing in IC engine test beds. In-cylinder pressure trace, pressure-crankangle plots and their analysis. Diesel injection systems measurements: fuel injection start pressure and fuel quantity per injection. Pollutants measurements in IC exhaust gases. Total energy calculations in working IC engines.

Expected Course Outcome

After the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • perform thermodynamic calculation in IC engines
  • perform measurements in working IC engines and testify on their proper operation
  • know the main pollutant formation mechanisms in IC engines
