Aims and Scope

The student will acquire knowledge to evaluate any workplace, to assess risks and propose measures to increase safety and prevent occupational risks. The student will become familiar with technical regulations relating to occupational safety and health issues (to meet the requirements placed on the Safety Engineer) and to more general issues within their areas of interest of energy engineers.

Course Description  

Hazardous working conditions, an accident. Laws relating to safety at work. The microclimate within the workplace. Thermal stress. Ventilation requirements. Lighting in the workplace, quantitative and qualitative parameters. Limiting exposure to noise. Estimation of equivalent sound-exposure. Protection from chemical substances. Personal protective equipment requirements. Safety of machinery, guides, interlocking machinery, ergonomics. Fire protection, passive fire protection, active fire protection – fire fighting. Safety at electrical installations. Fault tree analysis of causes for accident investigation. Administrative measures to reduce risks at work. Prevention and protection against risks. The role of a Safety Engineer, and the relevant legislation. Legislation within the broad areas of interest of energy engineering (legislative framework for renewable energies, energy market liberalization, etc.). 

Expected Course Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Undertake risk assessment studies.
  • Suggest measures to increase safety at work and protect health.
  • To provide services as Safety Engineers.
