CE742. Traffic Engineering and Road Safety (ects: 7) The course addresses two major scientific areas (Traffic Engineering and Road Safety) and is divided in two respective components. Furthermore, it contains a theoretical and a laboratorial part. The theoretical part contains: Basic traffic variables, their calculation and their measurement methods; Fundamental traffic flow equation and its applications; Traffic capacity and Level of Service, and their analyses in several situations (e.g. highways); Signalization; Parking; System “driver, vehicle and road environment”; Factors that influence road safety; Detection of dangerous (black) spots; and Risk analysis. The laboratorial part includes: Measurement of basic traffic variables using handheld counters, cameras and roadside equipment (ADR); Analysis of traffic parameters using computerized applications; Traffic simulation program; Collection and analysis of road safety data; and Calculation of risk indicators.
