Characteristic case studies from Greek and international literature. Discontinuities mapping, hydraulic properties, permeability. Tunnel classification systems (Terzaghi, RMR, Q, GSI) and semi-empirical design methods, areas of practice and limitations. Strength criteria: Mohr-Coulomb, Hoek-Brown. Stress and strain field around a deep circular tunnel. Development of strains along the tunnel axis. Tunneling: Convergence - confinement curves calculation. Excavation methods - selection criteria. NATM method, the observational construction method and full face boring excavation methods (TBM and EPB machines). Types of temporary support and final lining.
