“Study on the electronics ecosystem: overview, developments and Europe's position in the world” — SMART 2016/0007
(2017/S 122-246621)
Objectives and description
The
Directorate General for Communications Networks, content and Technology
of the European Commission has published a call for tenders for a
“Study on the electronics ecosystem: overview, developments and Europe's
position in the world” — SMART 2016/0007.
This new study initiated by the Commission aims at
providing an up-to-date overview of the Micro and Nanoelectronics
components and systems (MNE) value chain together with latest data on
industrial activity along the MNE value chain in Europe and in the
world. In terms of units of analysis, it will go beyond previous studies
to generate data on at the level of firms, value chain segments and
end-user markets.
The scope of the study covers the following:
· Firstly,
the study will define the MNE value chain and carry out a ‘mapping
activity’ to provide a clear picture as of the European MNE industry
base - including players, value chains and end markets for MNE. This
will be done by taking into account the evolutions in the industry
structure described above.
· Secondly,
the study will collect and compile data which allow measuring the size,
characteristics and dynamics of industrial activity in MNE in Europe at
the level of firms and individual segments – including both single EU
Member States and the EU as whole.
· Thirdly,
the envisaged study will provide an analysis of the positioning and
performance of the European MNE industrial base vis-à-vis competitors in
other world regions. This requires benchmarking the industry data
obtained on European industrial activity with major competitor regions.
· Finally,
latest trends in technology and markets will be analysed together with
their impact on the European industry structure and competitiveness. The
study will identify future opportunities and challenges facing Europe
and will propose strategic orientations for Europe to help increase its
chances to tap into new areas for innovation, growth and employment.
