Diploma Thesis
During
the 8th semester, each student must write a thesis on a topic which
must be directly associated with the subject area of the Department. Students
may select a topic from the list of topics proposed by the professors or they
may propose a topic themselves. In
order for a student to be assigned a thesis, he/she must have successfully
completed the course on “Research Methods" and the “Research Seminar”. Work on the thesis may be extended beyond the end
of the last year of studies, depending on the extent and requirements of the
topic. The research
for the thesis may be carried out in various organizations, by decision of the
Department Council. All professors
undertake 3-5 theses with topics that are relevant to their field. Theses may be co-supervised if deemed necessary
when specific expert knowledge is required or if nature of the thesis requires
it. Two students
may jointly undertake a thesis and in this case, the thesis
must reflect a corresponding body of work and the contribution of each of the
students must be apparent.
Students may
submit their theses proposals for the winter semester between 1/9 and 20/10,
while for the summer semester applications are to be submitted between 1/3 and
20/4. The proposals are reviewed and approved by the relevant Subject Group,
while the “excerpt of minutes” which refers to thesis proposals approved,
rejected or which need further clarification, will be posted on the
DepartmentĒs website, through which interested students are expected access the
notification. Completed theses are to be submitted during the last week of
April or October respectively, whilst presentations are to be made 15 days from
the final submission date. The exact dates for thesis
submission and presentation are determined each semester by the Department
Council and are announced on the DepartmentĒs website. A detailed
description of the procedure for undertaking and preparing a thesis is provided
on the DepartmentĒs website, where the “Thesis Guide” is posted.
