AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

This subject aims to gain background knowledge of the evolutionary process of the interior decoration and furniture in those periods which laid the foundations of modern design and decoration, and which also delineated the present and the future of design. Consequently, this would help students in the applicability and implementation of the theoretical knowledge in specific design areas such as: space planning, furniture and utilitarian objects. It is an essential, infrastructure subject as it can constitute a basic tool for any researcher or scholar specialized in any design discipline.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
In depth historical research of the evolution of decoration and furniture from the post - Renaissance period, the Industrial Revolution (18th century A.D. - 19th century A.D.) as well as the twentieth century, with a simultaneous study of the interior design of each period. Advanced study of furniture and decoration in the post industrial revolution period, deep research on the values ​​and trends of the twentieth century enhanced by parallel presentations of both architectural and furniture design achievements of the twentieth century. Study of the possibility of the application of such knowledge in the design arena of the 21st century.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the end of the course students will be able to understand and evaluate: a) the evolution of decoration in terms of space and object during the periods that shaped modern design, b) the contribution of the Industrial Revolution and c) the values ​​as well as the trends of the twentieth century in space planning, furniture and object design.
