AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
This course deals with the teaching of the potentialities and the appropriate use of modern materials and construction methods, in relation with interior and outdoor architectural configurations. It also establishes a common language of understanding between designers and specialized engineers for the successful implementation of architectural inspirations and projects. The acquisition by the students of knowledge and skills in this field constitute the objective of this course.


COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course focuses on the construction of light frames (steel, wood), on the elements of walls roofs, investment and equipment of buildings, as well as on refurbishment projects. In the context of theoretical instruction the following topics are developed:
Wood frames - wooden roofs. Steel frames - steel constructions. Space frames - shells. Tiling. Wood investments. Metal sheets and panel investments. Aluminium sheets, copper, titanium zinc investments. Natural-artificial stone investments. Artificial plates/sheets investments. Plasterboard. Ceilings. Stairs. Insulating materials. Transparent/translucent roofs/shelters. Internal doors. Glazing, curtain walls. Photovoltaic systems in architectural design.
Theoretical teaching includes visits and studying of the design and construction of important contemporary architectural structures in Athens. Laboratory projects aim to teach students how to implement their design inspirations by developing an integrated architectural and structural project.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
The acquiring by the students of the ability to successfully use contemporary materials and construction methods, as much in the process of conception as during the accomplishment of an architectural project.
