COURSE DESCRIPTION
A. The subject is supported by a series of lectures articulated into thematic unities dealing with the following subjects:
Relation of art/architecture between traditional and modern societies: definition of art/architecture in traditional societies, the experience of space and time, the space as imago mundi; reference to examples from all over the world.
Relation of art/architecture between modern and postmodern societies: Alternative approaches to postmodern architecture. Respect to or break with tradition? Ontological Hermeneutics and Deconstruction. Reference to the theory and the work of architects as Rob and Léon Krier, Aldo Rossi, Demetri Porphyrios, Hans Hollein, Bernar Tschumi, Peter Eisenman, Coop Himmelbau, and others.

Evolution of the Greek house. Applications on the basis of the Palladio / Le Corbusier duality.
Baroque as an expression of Classical architecture. Interventions related to Folding architecture. Examples and applications.
The students work out an essay on a theoretical matter which they present to their fellow students. This represents the 1/3 of the final grade.
Β. As an application project students have to intervene on a particular neoclassical building. They have to cover the particular needs of new functions operating within the old shell, on the basis of the theory discussed in the workshop. The project represents the 2/3 of the final grade. Students work in teams of 1-3 persons.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES
This subject provides the student with a theoretical and methodological framework for the intervention upon historical buildings and their surrounding space.
